Story behind the header photo: My great-great-grandfather Heinrich Schmidt on his 91st birthday. He was born in the mid-1800s and came from Germany to America where he was supposed to meet his two cousins in St Louis. They pulled a no-show, stranding then-17-year-old Heinrich in the big city all by himself. But Heinrich managed to prosper, first starting a prospering carpetry business that specialized in coffins, and later becoming the president of a bank and earning himself a tidy fortune. Another interesting tidbit: One of his five daughters was murdered by the hired hand, whom she had discovered in an affair with the maid; the hired hand, in a panicked rage, pushed her down the cellar steps.
